The incessant drip from the kitchen was playing games with my mind as now I was beginning to think I was sitting in a puddle of water. I wasn’t of course. However, I was starting to think that it might be a good idea to go and turn off the kitchen taps which I had left running in order to drown some ants. Some may think of me as being rather slothful, but I prefer to think of myself as an energy conservationist. Well, all those lentil eating, yoghurt sniffing hippies are always going on about how we must save the planet by saving energy. I’m just doing my bit here, that’s all! Anyway, ‘Countdown’ has just started and I need all my energy for the conundrum. I can go turn off the taps later. They can wait. Anyway, my flat mate will be home from work soon and he’ll pass the kitchen as he comes into the flat. Yes I’ll ask him to turn them off. What a good idea!

Causes of asthma are usually caused by environmental things. A person with asthma can have their set of specific things that can set their asthma off; however there are several common triggers amongst asthmatics. Tree pollens, mold, smoke from tobacco or other types of smoke, and air pollution all play a part in triggering an attack, whether the attack is mild or severe. Changes in the weather or seasons, dust, exercise, and even stress can also cause breathing problems for a person with asthma. Asthma can be triggered by things that we encounter in our everyday lives. This makes it very difficult for asthmatics to do simple things in their lives. The extra-long staple 2-ply and 3-ply cotton thread are both ideal for quilting for both machine use and hand quilting. The #40 and #50 can be used for piecing and quilting and because these are extra-long staples, they are lint-free. If the thread use select is also mercerized the thread is put through a process which caused the thread to swell, become more round and straighter. Stray fibers or fuzz is singed off, leaving a smoother thread. The thread is more lustrous and absorbs water and dye more readily. Most fine cottons, like Sea Island, Egyptian and Pima Cottons are mercerized; these long-staple cottons respond best to the mercerizing process.

Always use mercerized cotton thread from the top of the spool. You can determine top from bottom by unraveling a length. If the thread just hangs loosely, you have started unraveling from the top. If it twists, you have unraveled from the bottom. To identify the type of thread you’re using, look for a label. If none exists, you probably have a short-staple cotton thread. Extra-long staple thread is used by hand quilters because of the ease with which it pulls through fabric. It doesn’t knot, doesn’t fuzz and is virtually problem-free. This thread is great for piecing. A good sewing thread is 50wt 3-ply cotton thread in Egyptian long-staple mercerized cotton. This thread is resistant to shrinkage, safe to iron, colorfast and fade resistant. It can be used for machine sewing and hand sewing. The best quilting threads are 44wt 3-ply, 44wt 3-ply and a 50wt 3-ply cotton mercerized threads. These threads provide the strength and finish for hand and machine quilting. They have a smooth touch and appearance when used.

Use a #100/16 topstitch needle when sewing with the thicker thread, 30wt for quilting. This will reduce breakage and fraying of the thread when the needle size is correct. If you use an extra-long staple thread you will be insured to have a thread that resists breakage and stitches more smoothly. When piecing use extra-long staple thread and when quilting use the same because the thread will withstand more pulling and naturally resist fraying because of its increase tensile strength; the longer the staple, the stronger the tensile strength. If for some reason the thread is old or just weak and it breaks very easily, discard the thread. It is no longer of any use to anyone sewing any longer. Use strong threads which resist breakage whenever you sew and you will enjoy your project for years to come.

I just had a call today from a guy in New Brunswick and they buy 25,000 trailer seals per year and he now says that I can’t get them ready fast enough so he might have to go with someone else. I told him that if he can get things ready today then I can get the order in and to him by the middle of June but so far no reply. He knew our lead times so it might just be a way to stick with his old supplier as he keeps saying he has to talk to the girls in the packaging room that use the security seals.
